What qualifies me to do this?
Since my first work experience in placement at 17, Iāve only ever worked for Public Relations, Advertising & Innovation Agencies before setting up my own consultancy:
Iāve learnt the best practices from big global brands in huge creative agencies and employed them on small businesses with my own consultancy
Iāve taught thousands of entrepreneurs and creatives through universities, creative accelerators, online business schools, brand partnerships, co-working spaces, and magazines.
I walk my talk. Iāve built my solopreneur career via self-promotion featured in 100s of podcasts, press articles, talks & workshops for memberships and networks.
Written two small business books, a global ambassador for Adobe Express and instructor for Domestika
My own story, or what I call showing a bit of ankle
I have always wanted to be a journalist or a writer. Iām really good at helping people with PR.
Substack allows me to combine the both.
As a child, I was an avid member of the āFunday Times Club and dreamt of being Lois Lane from Superman as an investigative journalist.
My Dad published my first fiction book in his office binder when I was 7. (Super limited-edition one-off copy with bespoke illustration š).
However, my journey in writing stopped when my confidence was knocked out of me academically at school.
By chance, work experience placement at 17 led to a career in communications.
Iāve worked for some of Londonās top advertising, creative and innovation agencies before starting my own boutique consultancy The Wern in 2014.
I met so many amazing people who couldnāt afford traditional PR & branding agency pricing, so I tried to keep my fees as low as possible.
It turns out itās hard to run an affordable agency AND make a profit, so the DIY resources were born.
I wrote Hype Yourself to help small businesses who wanted to get themselves out there and Brand Yourself with my branding geek and colour enthusiast co-founder of my children.
I paid to upskill in teaching, hosting workshops, presenting and public speaking, and I practised my craft for free for years.
Today: Fleximote writing & workshops on Self-promotion
In November 2023, the co-founder of my children and creative agency left my business for a dream in-house role.
We took shared parental leave with our first two children, and childcare was 50/50.
Today, with our third child, Iāve been on full-time maternity leave in a country where I am learning to speak the language.
I shut down running my agency and am now focused on writing here and putting all of my chips in on Substack until I get full-time childcare in September 2026.
Iāve set the audacious goal to hit 1,001 paid subscribers to make my childhood dream of writing for a job a reality by then. My two motivations are:
To serve as many creatives in the confidence, know-how and tips to get themselves out there
To build a sustainable, flexible remote business so that when my second child has their next round of open heart surgery (pencilled for 2025), I can be with them every day.
