💰 How I got paid to write for a dream publication
📰And why you don't need press contacts or a business expertise to do the same
This is a good one.
Without any prior press connections and a casual bit of newsjacking, I not only got some press for myself, but I even got paid for it!
Yes. I have 20+ years of experience in PR, but this is a great example of you not needing to have a little black book to get a story.
I did it. You can too. Let’s get into it.
In case you missed it. I talked a few weeks back about how I create a manifestation or moodboard of brands, places, press, and people I want to collaborate with using logos.
One of those logos was the ‘i’ newspaper.
I have a subscription to Apple News and I regularly see i opinion pieces trending, so it had been on my list for a while.
NB: Paid readers have access to video training for how to pitch to the Metro blogs and opinion here.
Opinion pieces are where, you guessed it, you submit an opinion piece. It can be something topical, in reaction to the news, a film, a TV show, a government announcement.
After watching Lena Dunham’s new Netflix series, Too Much, and after celebrating one of my Dad pals on Instagram this week, I had an idea for a story that I thought could work.
Next, I will share the exact pitch email I wrote, the email address I used to pitch, how much I was paid, and my takeaway tips for you.
P.S. For Substack writers, I know there has been a lot of noise about organic reach through recommendations dramatically decreasing in the last month or so. Watch out for a guest piece I’ve written for
coming out tomorrow (Monday, 28th July) on how I would focus on growing off the platform right now.How did I know who to pitch to? I didn’t.
I googled “How to submit an opinion piece to the i'“ and landed on this page.
