WELCOME TO THIS WEEKS PROMPT
Nail your one-liner:
Journalists don't have time to decipher what your business does. Make sure you can summarise it in just one sentence. It can evolve, but define it from the start.
It's a lot easier said than done. Can you neatly tie up what you do in one bow?
If you are a multi-hyphenate, you might want to explain everything that you do, but have you considered using an overarching theme instead?
If you spy a #journorequest, you are responding to or perhaps answering a query in Lightbulb, you don't want to take up prime time responding space with having to explain the minutiae of your job.
You can always include an additional biography to showcase your full expertise when pitching.
Why else do you need to nail this?
Introduction - Whether it is on a podcast, on-stage or at a networking event, you need a clear response to ββwhat do you do?ββ
Memorability - when you are clear and concise about your expertise, you remain front of mind. It helps people to come and work with you when they are ready for your product or service.
Confidence - when you can introduce yourself briefly, you will feel more powerful in what you are selling
Intrigue leads to sales - when we understand what you are selling, we want to buy from you. If we have to listen or read a whole paragraph and still not sure, you risk losing us.
Social media audit - Have you checked all your social media accounts to see if your one-liner or biography matches up?
5-year-olds or Grandparents - Do we need a degree to decipher your actions? If you say it out loud to a young child or an elderly relative, can they understand what you are saying?
Example of my one-liner:
You will notice I don't mention I'm an author/writer/speaker in my bio.
For press opportunities, I might say self-promotion consultant that defaults into PR consultant because that is what people understandd.
I have the photos of the products on my banner.
If I were going to step it up a notch, perhaps I would use a photo of me on stage to subliminally explain that I do keynote speaking.
I am juggling work with maternity leave, so I am happy with this photo reflecting my current work situation.
I still think there is room for improvement, and it is ever-evolving, but if I am going to tell you to Hype Yourself, I have to start with myself, ok?
In this weeks bonus for subscribers, we will also cover the following:
- Exercises to help us find the correct language
- Examples of great one-liners
- Opportunity to practice with the group and get feedback in the comment section
